ADVERTISE HERE

KUCHING (April 6): The relevant authorities, particularly the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and Sarawak Water have been urged to improve the road condition, water pipes and drainage system along Lorong Liu Shan Bang 5 in Kota Sentosa here.
Residents raised these long-standing unresolved issues with Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen’s special assistant. Michael Kong, who conducted a site visit recently.
“They have faced these long-standing and unresolved issues despite repeated complaints over the years. The continued inaction by the authorities is both disappointing and unacceptable,” he said in a statement on Sunday.
He noted that the road surface is uneven, poorly paved and shows clear signs of sinkage.
“This is not merely an inconvenience but also poses a safety hazard for motorists and residents who rely on this road daily. If left unattended, the situation will deteriorate and may eventually lead to more serious structural failure,” he warned.
Kong added that residents had complained for months about a persistent underground water pipe leak, yet no action had been taken.
“Continuous leakage will inevitably cause soil erosion beneath the road, worsening the sinkage problem and increasing the risk of road collapse. This is a serious infrastructure issue that demands immediate intervention from Sarawak Water,” he stressed.
He also highlighted that the drainage system in the area is “clearly inadequate”.
He observed that the road sits at a significantly lower level compared to the surrounding land, causing rainwater to flow and stagnate during heavy rainfall.
“As a result, residents frequently experience flash floods, disrupting their daily lives and damaging property. The current drainage system is no longer fit for purpose and must be urgently reviewed and upgraded to ensure proper water discharge,” he said.
In addition, Kong pointed out that the area is plagued by overgrown, poorly maintained trees, some of which are in contact with overhead electricity cables, posing a serious risk to public safety.
“This is an accident waiting to happen, and the failure to carry out routine maintenance is inexcusable. These are basic municipal responsibilities that should never be neglected for such a prolonged period,” he said.
He added that the situation at Lorong Liu Shan Bang 5 reflects a clear failure in maintenance, response and accountability.
He therefore called upon the relevant authorities to take immediate, coordinated and decisive action to resolve all these issues without further delay.
Kong said he will continue to monitor this matter closely and will not hesitate to raise it again if no action is taken.
“The safety, well-being and quality of life of residents must not be compromised due to prolonged inaction,” he added.
