KUCHING (Jan 26): Kuching City FC advanced to the Malaysia Cup quarter-finals after overturning a first-leg deficit with a 2-0 win over Penang FC in the second-leg Round of 16 match at Stadium Negeri here on Saturday.
In rainy and challenging conditions at Stadium Negeri The Cats produced an impressive comeback in front of home fans to progress on a 2-1 aggregate after losing 1-0 in the first leg.
After dominating possession they finally broke the deadlock in the closing minutes of the first half through Gabriel Nistelrooy Tamin. Ronald Ngah Wanja quickly added a second to give the hosts a comfortable cushion going into the break.
An earlier header by Gabriel in the 32nd minute was ruled out for offside.
Speaking after the match, Kuching City FC head coach Aidil Sharin Sahak drew satisfaction from the execution of the game plan to respond to Penang’s direct approach.
He praised players and supporters for their spirited display.
“I want to give credit to the players and the fans as the boys worked very hard tonight and created a great atmosphere. We knew they would rely on long balls and the players handled it well. We controlled the game and dominated for long periods,” he said.
On the tactical approach, he explained that changes in formation and team structure were made to provide more support in attack so as to counter Penang’s style.
“We adjusted our system to deal with their long balls and to be more effective going forward, and the players responded well,” he said.
The team also adapted effectively to the rain-soaked and uneven surface, he added.
“Although the pitch was not in the best condition, the players managed it well. If the conditions were better, we could play even better football,” he observed.
Aidil also expressed satisfaction with the overall depth of his squad, noting that competition for places has improved performance in training and matches.
“We now have balance in every department, and anyone can step in when needed. The intensity in training has also improved,” he said.
With the victory, Kuching City set up a quarter-final clash with Brunei DPMM FC, who progressed after securing a 3-1 aggregate win over Kelantan.
The tie will be played over two legs, with the first leg in Brunei on Feb 8 and the return leg in Kuching on Feb 15.
