KUCHING (Feb 1): Irresponsible news reporting must be dealt with firmly, especially those that undermine the interests and rights of Sarawak and Sabah, said Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and Ukas) Datuk Abdullah Saidol.
He said certain media portals have failed to adhere to journalistic ethics, citing the use of unnamed and vague sources such as “political experts” and “observers” without proper explanation or accountability.
“The tone of their reports, which portrays us as greedy, arrogant and the like, I see as a reflection of themselves, because for a long time Sabah and Sarawak have consistently practised tolerance and negotiation in our policies and politics.
“However, the recent provocations appear excessive, and our Premier has advised me and several others not to overly entertain such provocative tones, as he prefers diplomacy and discussion over provocation,” he said, according to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
He said this when met after the Walk for Health Programme which was officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Sarawak Botanical Garden in Petra Jaya here.
Abdullah warned that extreme and provocative narratives could create misunderstandings among the public, particularly those who may not fully understand the relationship between the federal government and Sarawak and Sabah.
He said this was especially concerning when sensitive issues such as gas resource claims and legal matters are involved.
“Not everyone understands the full context, and irresponsible assumptions can unsettle the public.
“Such situations are not conducive to maintaining harmonious relations between the federal government, Sarawak and Sabah,” he said.
