KUCHING, 16 Oct: Sarawak Government and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) are urged to consider construction of PETROS oil station in Pekan Kabong as well as establishment of skills training centre to meet the needs of rural residents and youth.

Member of the National Assembly (ADUN) Kabong, Dato Mohd Chee Kadir said the facilities of the oil station are essential to support economic activities of the population, especially smallholders, fishermen, farmers and traders.

According to him, the absence of an easily accessible oil station could complicate the daily affairs of residents and affect the smooth running of local economic activities.

"I hope this suggestion doesn't end up as just a note on paper. The government and PETROS must provide clear feedback and take concrete follow-up actions in the interest of Kabong people".

He said so at a conference of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN), here today.

In this regard, he urged PETROS to conduct a feasibility study, while the Government of Sarawak is expected to provide support in accelerating planning for the implementation of the project.

In addition, he proposed the establishment of skills training centre in DUN Kabong area to provide technical and vocational training for youth as well as after school.

He said the centre could offer training based on industry needs, thus increasing employment opportunities and helping young people generate their own income.

"Don't let young people in rural areas be left behind just because of the distance constraints and the cost of training in cities", he said.

He hoped the proposal would be given serious attention to ensuring that youth in Kabong have access to training opportunities and appropriate skills development.

In the same debate, Mohd Chee also emphasized that rural people are entitled to good public facilities, reasonable and comparable to urban areas.

He then expressed his support for the Supply Bill (2027) 2026 with the hope that the budget would bring more comprehensive and equitable prosperity to all Sarawak people, especially rural residents. -TVS
