KUCHING, April 4: A peat fire in Kampung Penasu, Daro, Sarawak, has been fully extinguished after an eight-day firefighting operation involving local villagers, estate workers, and 24 firefighters.

The fire, which broke out on March 27, burned a total of 75 hectares. It was divided into three sectors—A, B, and C—all of which were reported fully contained by April 3.

Firefighting efforts were led by PBT II Hasman Bakar, the Daro Fire and Rescue Station chief, with support from teams from Tg. Manis, Mukah, and Sarikei. Firebreaks created by the Sarawak Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), together with efforts by the estate and villagers, prevented further spread.

The operation concluded after discussions between fire personnel, the village head, and community representatives, who agreed that continued monitoring would be sufficient to prevent any flare-ups.

“The fire has been fully controlled, and the perimeter is secure.

“The estate and villagers will continue monitoring and act immediately if any smoke or flames reappear,” said Hasman.

A total of 24 firefighters, supported by one fire engine and a Hilux vehicle, took part in the operation, alongside 10 estate workers and six villagers. — DayakDaily
