KUCHING: Ethical, resilient and sustainable leadership is increasingly important as artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies reshape workplaces and decision-making.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri stressed the importance of accountability, human oversight and trust as AI systems develop capabilities to perform increasingly complex tasks.

She said leadership must combine innovation with integrity, resilience and respect for people, drawing a parallel with Sarawak’s traditional pua kumbu weaving.

She also said the intricate artistry of the pua kumbu offers a meaningful reflection on leadership in which each individual thread carries purpose, yet the structural beauty and strength of the tapestry depend on how harmoniously those threads are woven together.

“In much the same way, progress is sustained when innovation is woven together with integrity, resilience and respect for people.

“These are not qualities reserved solely for people in high office but they also matter equally across universities, businesses, public institutions and community organisations. We earn trust not simply through what we promise, but through how consistently we act,” she said.

She said this when officiating the EmpowerUS 2026 Seminar Programme at the State Library here today (Oct 17).

Nancy, who is also the Patron of Ohio University Alumni, highlighted the role of inclusive social development in Malaysia’s progress, saying national strength should be reflected not only in economic performance but also in opportunities for women, resilient families and the dignity of all members of society.

“In this regard, the recently announced Budget 2027 reflects the government’s continued commitment to ensuring that social development remains an integral part of Malaysia’s progress agenda.

“This year, the ministry has been allocated RM4.355 billion, representing a four per cent increase compared to the previous year,” she said.

She added that the National Women’s Policy and Women’s Development Action Plan 2025 to 2030 would continue to support women’s participation and leadership across sectors.

Among the initiatives highlighted were the Women’s Leadership Apprenticeship Programme, which connects emerging women leaders with experienced mentors, and PRISMAnita, which provides early intervention, advice, referrals and coordinated support for women in need, including survivors of domestic violence.
