Former MCA president Dr Ling Liong Sik died this morning. He was 82.
MCA president Wee Ka Siong confirmed Ling’s death, Bernama reported.
Ling held several positions in government and last served as transport minister from 1986 to 2003, during which time he also helmed MCA.
The Kuala Kangsar native, who went to the Royal Military College in Sungai Besi, was elected the Mata Kuching (now Bagan) MP in 1974 and defended the seat in the next two general elections (1978 and 1982).
He was elected the Labis MP in 1986, a seat he held for four terms.
Former Barisan Nasional secretary-general Annuar Musa said Ling’s passing was a great loss to the nation.
“My family and I deeply feel the loss of a close friend and neighbour,” he said in a Facebook post.
“May his family remain strong during this most difficult time.”
