KUCHING, May 28: The Welfare Department (JKM) is still attempting to interview family members following the shocking death of a baby who was found face down in a bucket filled with water at a house in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, while under the care of its grandmother.

Federal Minister for Women, Family and Community Development, Dato Sri Nancy Shukri, JKM Negeri Sembilan had already been informed of the incident and was currently looking into the matter.

She explained that the case appeared to involve caregiving within the family, but authorities were still unable to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“JKM Negeri Sembilan wants to interview the family members first.

“At the moment, it is still difficult because the matter involves the family and consent is also needed,” she told reporters when met after attending Ibadah Qorban programme in Kampung Bintawa Hilir today.

Nancy added that JKM would also provide psychosocial assistance, including counselling support, to those involved.

“We do not yet know what actually happened inside the house. Maybe some family members were asleep or there were other circumstances. So the matter has not been finalised,” she added.

According to her, officers from JKM and the ministry’s protection unit were still trying to obtain further information from the family as of yesterday.

According to the report, the 11-month-old baby girl was found face down in a bucket containing a small amount of soapy water at the backyard of a house in Jalan Sri Permata Ladang, Seremban, at about 2.30pm on May 26 while under the care of her 54-year-old grandmother.

Seremban police chief ACP Mohd Yatim Osman said the baby had been left sleeping in a cradle while the grandmother was cooking and hanging laundry before she realised the child was missing.

The baby was later rushed to a nearby clinic and referred to Hospital Tuanku Ja’afar, where she was pronounced dead at 4.30pm. — DayakDaily
