KUCHING, June 13: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap is taking steps to secure approximately RM200,000 under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) 2027 to replace ageing and worn-out water pipes at Taman Olive in 7th Mile following repeated pipe bursts that have disrupted water supply and inconvenienced residents.
To facilitate the proposed project, Yap has arranged for officers from the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) Kuching and Sarawak Water to conduct site assessments and prepare cost estimates for the replacement works.
He said the project was identified after residents repeatedly raised concerns over frequent water pipe bursts in the residential area.
“Over the past year alone, more than five water pipe bursts have occurred within Taman Olive Batu Tujuh, causing water supply interruptions, road surface damage, repair works, and considerable inconvenience to residents.
“Rather than waiting for the problem to worsen, I believe it is important to take proactive action to address the root cause. Repeated repairs may provide temporary relief, but replacing the aging water pipes is the more sustainable long-term solution,” he said in a statement today.
According to Yap, Taman Olive was first developed in 1985 and comprises 62 houses. After more than four decades in service, many of the existing water pipes have reached the end of their useful lifespan and are increasingly prone to leaks and bursts.
“The residents deserve a reliable water supply system. Frequent pipe bursts not only disrupt daily life but also create unnecessary stress and inconvenience for families, especially senior citizens, children, and those working from home,” he said.
Yap said he believes in responding swiftly to issues raised by residents and ensuring practical solutions are pursued.
“When residents bring their concerns to me, I do not simply raise the issue and walk away. I work with the relevant authorities, obtain the necessary technical assessments, and pursue funding to ensure that the problem can be properly resolved,” he said.
He added that the preparation of cost estimates by JBALB and Sarawak Water is a crucial step towards securing RTP 2027 funding and implementing the project.
“I appreciate the prompt cooperation of the agencies involved. Their technical expertise is essential in ensuring that the proposed project is properly planned and effectively implemented for the benefit of residents,” he said.
Yap stressed that his approach has always been focused on delivering tangible results and improving the quality of life of the people in Kota Sentosa.
“Residents want action and solutions. My commitment is to continue being accessible, responsive, and reliable in addressing the needs of the community. Infrastructure upgrades such as this may not always attract attention, but they make a real difference to the daily lives of the people we serve,” he said.
He reaffirmed his commitment to monitoring the progress of the proposal and working towards securing the necessary RTP 2027 allocation to permanently resolve the long-standing water supply issue in Taman Olive. — DayakDaily
