KUCHING (Feb 1): This city is all set to host Mr Sarawak bodybuilding championships this June 20, which will mark its 60th anniversary.

To be organised by Kuching Division Bodybuilding Association (KDBBA) in collaboration with Sarawak Bodybuilding Association (SBBA) and under the purview of Malaysian Bodybuilding Federation (MBBF), the annual competition will gather bodybuilding and physique athletes representing the three main zones: South (Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Sri Aman and Betong); Central (Sibu, Kapit, Sarikei, Mukah and Bintulu); and North (Miri and Limbang).

“This will be a grand affair as we are celebrating over 60 years of Sarawak bodybuilding, which began in 1963.

“Actually, it should have been the 63rd anniversary, but there were three years when the championship was not held: in 1969, and during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, which were 2020 and 2021.

“Nonetheless, we strive to make this edition a spectacular one, and we expect to host more than 50 athletes and officials this year,” said KDBBA president Adrian Wong in his speech for the association’s fifth annual general meeting (AGM) here today (Feb 1).

The session also hosted SBBA president Dr Malvern Abdullah and vice-president George Awi William.

The organisation of the annual Mr Kuching 2026 championship was also discussed, where the committee had agreed that the competition date would be on June 13, a week before Mr Sarawak.

“Mr Kuching is also an important competition for us as this is where we get to see new talents year after year.

“This group is the future of Sarawak bodybuilding,” added Wong, also a vice-president of MBBF and SBBA.

Meanwhile, an election of KDBBA’s office-bearers for the 2026-2028 term was carried out at the start of the AGM, which had Wong re-elected as president, Philomena Dexclyn Siar as deputy president, Ghaz Ghazali as secretary, and Mohd Noor Amran as treasurer.

George is the appointed advisor, with Gerdashlie Bodos and Amran Abdullah assigned as the internal auditors.

The working committee comprises Sapian Jamain, Jeman Lidup, Nur Madinah Najwa Abdullah and Muhammad Syahdad Naquiyuddin Hadi Suhardi.

The new members are Joanne Lu and Nuraini Janah.

The KDBBA was established in November 2021, and was officially registered as a sports body under the Sports Development Act of Malaysia 1997 on March 21, 2022.
