KUCHING, Apr 12: The proposed bridge linking Sibu to the West Bank area has entered the final stage of design selection, pending a final decision by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) is currently evaluating two to three proposed design concepts, including one inspired by London Bridge.

He said the high-impact project is estimated to cost between RM300 million and RM400 million and has already received preliminary approval to proceed.

“We are now awaiting the Premier’s decision on the most suitable bridge design. Following that, the consultancy tender will be called, and I anticipate that within the next two to three years, the bridge will become a reality.

“If a bridge is built connecting Sibu to the West Bank, the entire surrounding area will certainly see significant development,” he said when officiating the Gongxi Raya 2026 programme organised by the Datuk Robert Lau Hoi Chew Madani Community at SMI Park in Sibu on Saturday (Apr 11).

Dr Sim, who is also the Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, noted that the project gained prompt attention after it was raised last year by Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan branch chairman, Kevin Lau Kor Jie, in the presence of the Premier.

He stressed that infrastructure development, particularly bridges, is crucial, highlighting that Sarawak has completed 20 bridges using its own funds.

He added that construction costs have risen by more than 40 per cent, making the earlier decision to implement such projects independently a prudent one. — DayakDaily
