KUCHING (Jan 8): The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) must ensure its appointed contractor fulfils its responsibilities effectively, said Michael Kong.
The special assistant to Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen highlighted a recent breakdown in rubbish collection at Stutong Tiarra 2 apartment complex on Jalan Stampin Baru.
Despite scheduled collections every Monday and Thursday, garbage was left uncollected for several days, with some waste accumulating for over a week.
“The apartment management contacted Trienekens days earlier about the issue and was assured collection would be carried out by yesterday (Tuesday),” Kong said in a statement.
“However, residents observed that the garbage truck merely passed without entering the premises to collect the rubbish.”
As a result, he said all garbage bins within the apartment compound were filled beyond capacity.
“Residents were forced to place rubbish bags at entrances and common areas, creating an increasingly unhygienic and unsafe environment.
“If left unaddressed, this situation could have led to serious health risks, including pest infestations and foul odours, affecting the well-being of residents,” he stressed.
Following further notification, the accumulated rubbish was eventually cleared.
“While the immediate problem has now been resolved, it is imperative that MBKS steps in to ensure that its appointed contractor carries out its duties and obligations properly,” said Kong.
He emphasised that basic services such as waste collection are non-negotiable.
“Accountability must be enforced to prevent a recurrence of this situation and to safeguard public hygiene and safety,” he said.
He also urged the relevant authorities, including MBKS and Trienekens, to review this matter seriously and ensure regular rubbish collection resumes without further disruption.
