KUCHING (Feb 5): The media serves as a vital bridge connecting the government, communities, and the public, said community leader Temenggong Dato Tan Joo Phoi.
Speaking at a media night organised by Chinese community leaders ahead of the Chinese New Year, Tan said professionalism, integrity, and responsibility enable the media to deliver timely, accurate information, reflect public voices, and uphold transparency and accountability.
“Without the media, a progressive, informed, and compassionate society would not be possible,” he said, adding that journalism also plays a key role in social development, community building, and charitable efforts by giving voice to those in need and promoting positive values.
Kapitan Dato Lau Sie Lok meanwhile described the event as an opportunity to strengthen ties with the local press and thanked journalists for their continued attention and professional reporting.
“Your writing and perspectives have allowed the public to see a more authentic and multifaceted side of us,” he said, expressing hope for continued open communication and cooperation.
The media night brought together community leaders and media practitioners in Kuching to foster closer engagement and recognise the important role of journalism in informing the public.
