KUCHING, April 13: Civil servants working from home (WFH) have been cautioned against sharing social media posts that could give the impression they are neglecting their duties, with disciplinary action looming for those who do.
According to Malay Mail report, Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Awang Alik Jeman said officers must exercise discretion and avoid uploading content showing leisure activities during working hours.
“Do not post photos or posts on social media that may be seen as neglecting work, such as playing badminton or going shopping.
“If this happens, I will be frank, action will be taken. I have already said this early on, do not do anything that could be detrimental to yourself. Action will be taken, there will be no exceptions in this matter,” he was quoted as saying during the ministry’s monthly assembly today.
The WFH arrangement, set to take effect on April 15, is part of the federal government’s effort to cushion the impact of ongoing geopolitical uncertainties, while also reducing operational costs.
However, Awang emphasised that the arrangement comes with strict conditions, and not all personnel would be eligible.
He said guidelines from the Public Service Department stipulate that WFH applies only to officers based in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor or state capitals, and those living more than eight kilometres from their workplace.
Uniformed personnel and enforcement officers, including those from the police, Immigration Department and other security agencies, are required to remain on duty.
Awang added that heads of departments must ensure essential services, including identity card counters, continue operating without disruption.
He also called on agencies to review spending and prioritise service delivery, including postponing non-critical projects and procurement if necessary.
He said WFH aims to cut fuel use and operating costs, but stressed that public service delivery and performance targets must not be compromised under any circumstances. — DayakDaily
