MIRI (Oct 3): A man was arrested after he was caught transporting 50 crates of duty-unpaid beer in the city here Wednesday.

Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said a Marine Police Force team carrying out an Op Kontraban operation intercepted the suspect at a commercial area around 11am.

“The 50 crates of beer, believed to be duty-unpaid, were found in the cargo bed covered by a tarp.

“The total value of the seizure, including the pickup truck, is estimated at RM101,549.50,” he said in a statement today.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.

Police will also apply for a remand order in the Magistrates’ Court to facilitate further investigation, he added.

Alexson said the public can channel crime-related information at any police station or by calling 085-433730.
