KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 4): Petronas LNG Ltd (PLL), a subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), has signed a 20-year liquefied natural gas (LNG) sale and purchase agreement (SPA) with QatarEnergy.

Petronas in a statement on Wednesday said this marks the first long-term LNG supply deal between the two companies.

Under the SPA, PLL will offtake up to two million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of LNG from QatarEnergy over the contract period.

The long-term volumes secured through the agreement will play a critical role in reinforcing Malaysia’s energy supply security, ensuring stable and reliable LNG availability to meet growing demand in Malaysia, Petronas said.

The agreement was signed during a ceremony in Doha, held on the sidelines of the 21st International Conference and Exhibition on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG2026).

The signing was witnessed by PETRONAS President and Group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik and QatarEnergy’s president and chief executive officer, who is also Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs, His Excellency Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi.

Tengku Muhammad Taufik said the agreement represents a key milestone for Petronas in strengthening energy security.

“The supply of LNG through partnerships with industry leading partners such as QatarEnergy complements the cargoes from our LNG heartlands in Malaysia and Canada, diversifying our supply nodes even as PETRONAS unlocks new avenues to derive greater value and efficiency,” he said.

Petronas said the collaboration enhances the resilience of its LNG portfolio amid a changing global energy landscape, while supporting Malaysia’s economic development and energy transition goals.

The agreement also signals a shared commitment by both companies to deepen cooperation across the LNG value chain and build a more sustainable, future-ready gas portfolio.

Petronas added that the deal reflects long-standing collaboration between Petronas and QatarEnergy and positions the partnership to deliver long-term value while supporting practical progress towards a more sustainable energy future.
