KOTA KINABALU (Jan 24): Sabah and Sarawak marked a significant breakthrough in regional energy cooperation on Saturday with the official energisation of the 275kV Sabah–Sarawak Power Grid Interconnection.

The interconnection, which was successfully implemented on Dec 13, 2025, links the power systems of both states and enables cross-border electricity flows to improve system stability, operational flexibility and overall supply reliability.

The link also provides an additional layer of energy security, allowing power to be shared during periods of peak demand or in the event of unplanned outages, thereby strengthening overall system resilience.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the interconnection will strengthen Sabah’s electricity supply system, making it more stable, reliable and sustainable as demand continues to rise.

“This will lead to a phased reduction in our dependence on fossil fuel based generation, strengthen Sabah’s electricity reserve margin and further boost investor confidence in the reliability of the state’s power supply,” he said at the project’s energisation ceremony at the Sabah International Convention Centre here.

Hajiji said the project is a vital milestone towards realising the shared vision of BIMP EAGA and the Asean Power Grid, paving the way for future power links with Kalimantan, Brunei Darussalam and eventually other neighbouring regions.

He said the Sabah government remains committed to ensuring electricity development in Sabah keeps pace with population growth, industrial expansion and rural development, adding that a stable and resilient power supply is a key strategic priority for the state.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg said the interconnection reflects a long term strategic investment to enhance energy resilience and support sustainable growth across Borneo.

“With Sarawak’s strength in renewable energy, particularly hydropower, we are well positioned to share power resources with our Borneo neighbours for our common benefit,” he said.

Abang Johari said the project also supports Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap by enabling greater use of renewable energy and reducing reliance on carbon-intensive generation while strengthening national energy security.

He added that feasibility studies are currently underway for future interconnections with Brunei Darussalam, Kalimantan and Peninsular Malaysia, laying the groundwork for a more integrated regional power network.

Both leaders said the project demonstrates the importance of close inter-state cooperation and marks a significant step towards building an interconnected, resilient and sustainable energy future for Borneo.
