KUCHING, April 10: Sarawak is planning to build a port in Lawas to address logistical challenges and support smoother development in the northern region of the State.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen infrastructure connectivity in Lawas and Limbang, including improvements in air and maritime access.

He said a jetty will first be constructed in Lawas to facilitate the movement of construction materials by contractors involved in ongoing development projects, before being upgraded into a full-fledged port.

“Limbang and Lawas face logistical challenges, and that is why it is important to build the jetty first. This jetty will later be upgraded into a port,” he said in a special interview produced by TVS in conjunction with the Sarawakku Sayang Programme today.

Awang Tengah, who is the Bukit Sari assemblyman, also noted that the coastal waters in Lawas, particularly around Pulau Sari, have depths of about 24 to 25 metres, reducing the need for extensive dredging and making the site suitable for port development.

“The location is also strategically positioned, being only about 1.5 kilometres from the mainland,’ he emphasised.

On air connectivity, he said the construction of a new airport in Lawas is currently underway, while runway extension works at Limbang Airport are also progressing actively.

In terms of energy supply, he added that Lawas was connected to the State power grid in December 2025, while Limbang is expected to be connected soon.

These efforts, he said, are crucial in reducing reliance on generator sets and supporting the expansion of renewable energy in the region. — DayakDaily
