SIBU (Feb 4): Community and village leaders (KMKKs) must carry out their duties with integrity, transparency and fairness while remaining professional and impartial in serving the public, said Sibu Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman.
He said their responsibility was to support and implement government policies professionally and to provide equal services to the people regardless of political background.
“Community leaders must also remain approachable and service-oriented.
“They must not abuse their authority or create unnecessary obstacles for residents seeking official verification and assistance,” he said during the presentation ceremony of appointment certificates to 30 KMKK under the Nangka state constituency here on Tuesday.
Abang Mohamad Porkan stressed that leadership positions were not meant for personal elevation but to serve the people.
“Be ready to help, open your doors to the community and facilitate government service delivery,” he said.
Abang Mohamad Porkan added that strong support for the state government was crucial to ensure administrative stability and the smooth implementation of policies, including initiatives benefitting civil servants and the wider community.
According to him, the issuance of appointment certificates reflected a shared commitment to continuity in leadership and effective grassroots administration.
“This appointment requires all of us to play our roles as grassroots leaders, whether in villages, longhouses or gazetted housing areas.
“It reflects the government’s trust and investment in community leadership,” he said.
Touching on Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), Abang Mohamad Porkan stressed the need for unity and strong grassroots backing to support the state leadership’s efforts to reclaim Sarawak’s rights particularly in relation to oil and gas resources.
“We must avoid political divisions and internal conflicts.
“Sarawak is governed for the interests of Sarawakians, and it is our shared responsibility to safeguard this,” he said.
He noted the tenure of KMKK had been extended until the end of this year, in line with directives from Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, adding that this period was significant as Sarawak prepares for the upcoming state election.
Also present were Sibu District Officer Tsong Chow Choon and Nangka Service Centre special administrative officer Mohamad Afiq Zainudin.
