KUCHING (Jan 23): Sarawak Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah has urged the public to report cases of abuse promptly following the death of a young woman in Sibu, who alleged years of physical and emotional mistreatment by family members.

The 22-year-old passed away at Sibu Hospital on Jan 18 after battling cancer.

Shortly before her death, her younger sister shared a letter online detailing the alleged abuse, which brought renewed attention to issues of family violence.

Sibu district police confirmed that a formal report was lodged on Dec 9 last year, and a full investigation is ongoing.

Fatimah said the case falls under police jurisdiction, and it is appropriate to let the Royal Malaysia Police handle the investigation.

“All relevant agencies are able to perform their duties efficiently, accurately, and promptly, especially when children are involved,” she told a press conference at Baitulmakmur II here.

Fatimah reiterated the ministry’s strong stance against all forms of violence, including sexual and physical abuse of women and children, and urged the public to take responsibility by reporting abuse to authorities such as the police, school counsellors, or the Social Welfare Department.

“Prompt reporting and allowing authorities to act is a shared responsibility. Without action, abuse may continue.

“What we must avoid is loss of life like this,” she said, adding that justice can only be served if investigative and legal processes are carried out properly.

She also stressed the importance of ongoing education and awareness to ensure the safety of children, particularly those who rely on adults for protection.

“Children have the right to be safe, protected, and secure,” she said.
