KUCHING (Feb 3): Strengthening connectivity across Borneo is critical to transforming the island into an integrated economic and trading platform, said Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said sustained investments in transport, logistics and air connectivity are laying the foundation for deeper regional integration and long-term economic growth across Borneo.
“Sarawak is investing heavily in infrastructure, utilities and telecommunications.
“We are also improving our transport and logistic networks, including integrated land transport, a new international airport and a new deep seaport to support growing industrial demand,” he said in his keynote address at the Indonesia Economic Summit (IES) 2026 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Abang Johari noted the complementary potential of port developments across Borneo, pointing to Kalimantan’s Kijing International Seaport as a deep-sea gateway that could work in tandem with ports in Sarawak.
“Together, these port developments create opportunities for complementary port functions and more efficient long-haul connectivity to East Asia, the Middle East and Europe,” he said.
He also said the return of direct flights between Kuching and Pontianak represents more than the restoration of an air route.
“It signals the renewal of connectivity across Borneo, facilitating the movement of people, ideas and enterprise, while supporting trade, tourism, education and business collaboration.
“In the same spirit, Sarawak has established AirBorneo to strengthen regional air links, while also expanding direct connections from the island to other parts of the world,” he said.
Abang Johari said connectivity across Borneo must also be underpinned by reliable and sustainable energy, noting that the island has drawn growing global attention in recent years for its renewable energy potential.
He said Sarawak is contributing to this momentum through close cooperation with Indonesia, including a joint hydropower development project in North Kalimantan with Indonesian partners.
These collaborations demonstrate how Borneo can advance clean energy through practical, cross-border partnerships, he added.
“Just two weeks ago, the Sabah Chief Minister and I launched the Sarawak–Sabah Power Grid Interconnection.
“This marks an important step toward a future Borneo Power Grid (BPG) and supports the longer-term vision of the Asean Power Grid (APG), strengthening cross-border energy connectivity across the region.
“This is one clear example of how Borneo can work together for mutual benefit,” he said, adding that renewable energy not only ensures a reliable power supply and supports climate responsibility, but also serves as a strategic enabler of broader economic transformation.
Looking ahead, Abang Johari said Sarawak’s future is closely linked to the prosperity of neighbouring regions, particularly with the rapid development of Indonesia’s new capital, Nusantara.
“This development reinforces Sarawak’s role as a close partner in Borneo’s progress, supporting infrastructure, trade and energy cooperation.
“The relocation of Indonesia’s capital is not just a national milestone for Indonesia but also a significant catalyst for economic growth across the entire island,” he said.
He stressed the importance of open dialogue among all stakeholders to foster mutual understanding, address concerns and chart a constructive path forward, adding that strong regional relationships and the smooth movement of people and goods are key to driving inclusive and sustainable development.
He also invited captains of industry to recognise Sarawak’s investment potential and explore opportunities for collaboration and long-term partnerships.
“The future of Borneo will not be shaped by any single economy acting alone.
“It will be defined by how well we collaborate, align our strengths and build long-term value together,” he said.
Abang Johari affirmed that Sarawak stands ready to work closely with Indonesia and other Borneo neighbours to advance sustainable growth, regional resilience and meaningful cooperation in the years ahead.
