BETONG (Feb 4): The fourth edition of the Sarawak Games (Suksar) this year serves as a strategic platform to strengthen the physical and mental preparedness of Sarawak athletes ahead of national and international competitions, said Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu.

According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, the State Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development said Suksar also plays a crucial role in identifying and nurturing young talent to represent Malaysia on the international stage, while maintaining Sarawak’s position as overall champions at the upcoming Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Selangor.

“This target is important to prove that Sarawak athletes are not only capable of excelling at the state level, but are also able to compete consistently and sustain outstanding performances at the national level.

“At the same time, they have the potential to progress to the international stage, especially as Sarawak will co-host the SEA Games next year in Kuching, followed by the Olympic Games in 2028.

“All these are steps to prepare our athletes to compete on the world stage, and for Sarawak athletes to proudly represent Malaysia,” he said after officiating the Suksar 2026 launching ceremony at the Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan Sports Complex here today.

Gerald, who is also chairman of Suksar IV 2026, expressed hope that athletes would use the games as a platform to showcase their true capabilities, strengthen self-confidence, and demonstrate a strong fighting spirit.

He also called on coaches and sports officials to continue guiding athletes holistically, not only in performance, but also in character building, discipline, leadership, and champion mentality.

Meanwhile, Betong Division Resident and co-deputy chairman of Suksar IV 2026, Datu Richard Michael Abunawas, said a total of 345 medals will be up for grabs, making the games one of the most competitive state-level sporting events.

Suksar 2026 involves 1,093 participants, including athletes, officials, support staff, and volunteers from across Sarawak, reflecting strong commitment from all parties to ensure the success of the prestigious games.

“A total of 11 sports will be contested, with 345 medals at stake, comprising 105 gold, 105 silver and 135 bronze,” he said.

According to Richard, Sri Aman will host basketball, petanque, table tennis, softball, and boxing events, while Betong will host weightlifting, cycling, netball, and taekwondo. Lubok Antu has been selected for karate and sepak takraw competitions.

He added that the games not only provide a competitive platform, but also help shape disciplined, high-integrity athletes, while strengthening unity among Sarawakians through sports.

Also present were Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa, Krian assemblyman Friday Belik, Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak Dzulkornain Masron, and Acting Sarawak Sports Corporation chief executive officer and Acting Sarawak Sports Council director Khairul Nizam Morshidi.
