KUCHING (Jan 29): Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bau Branch members are gathering detailed information on the needs of a family affected by a recent fire in Tondong, Bau, as part of efforts to provide assistance and follow-up support.
In a statement on Wednesday, its branch chairman Chong Yie Loong said the information collected would help guide further aid, including a fundraising initiative initiated by the branch.
Chong said the fundraising effort has so far received an encouraging response from party members.
“Our branch visited the residence of party member Phang Sze Phin a day after his house was damaged by a fire that broke out about 1pm on Jan 22.
“The visit was to assess the situation on the ground and to convey the branch’s concern and support to the family,” he said.
According to Chong, the fire spread rapidly, causing extensive damage to the house, while several vehicles parked nearby were also affected.
He said the household consists of eight members, including several adults and two young children aged eight years and 10 months.
“All family members managed to evacuate safely and no injuries were reported.
“However, the fire resulted in significant property loss and disrupted the family’s daily life, he added.
During the visit, SUPP Bau branch members also spoke with Phang and his family to better understand the challenges they are facing and to identify their immediate needs.
Chong said Phang has long been an active and committed member of the branch and community activities, and the branch is deeply concerned about the well-being of the family.
“We will continue to monitor the situation and coordinate available resources to help the family restore their basic living conditions,” he said.
Chong stressed that effective grassroots work requires direct engagement with the community.
“Only through on-site visits can we truly understand the difficulties faced by our members and residents, and ensure that our concern is translated into concrete action,” he added.
Also present during the visit were Kapitan Lee Yu Liang and Councillor Bong Chan Fui.
