KUCHING, April 23: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Youth Central has raised alarm over a dangerous shift in drug distribution methods, warning that narcotics are now being packaged in liquid form and embedded into vape cartridges.
Its chairman Kevin Lau Kor Jie said the discovery of vape cartridges suspected to contain liquid cannabis reflects increasing sophistication in how drugs are being processed and consumed.
“What is particularly alarming is the increasing sophistication in the packaging and distribution of these drugs, especially in liquid form,” he said in a statement today.
He stressed that the potential for such substances to be infused into electronic vaping devices, which are widely accessible in the market, poses a grave danger to society, particularly the younger generation.
Describing the trend as a serious and evolving threat, Lau called for urgent action to address the risks posed by drug-laced vape products.
He said this includes accelerating policy implementation, strengthening enforcement, and intensifying awareness campaigns in schools and communities.
On policy, Lau noted that the Sarawak government has expressed support for banning the sale and use of vape products, while at the federal level, Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad has confirmed that Malaysia is moving towards a nationwide ban.
“While this is a step in the right direction, greater urgency is needed, as implementation will inevitably take time,” he said.
Separately, Lau commended the Royal Malaysia Police for its recent RM16.2 million drug bust, describing it as a strong enforcement effort against drug trafficking.
“SUPP Youth remains committed to supporting all efforts aimed at combating drug abuse and protecting the wellbeing of our society,” he added. — DayakDaily
