Lau urges Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh and relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive and thorough investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

SIBU (April 7): A thorough investigation and review of safety procedures have been urged following the recent kayaking tragedy at Pantai Merdeka in Sungai Petani, Kedah, which claimed the lives of two Sarawakian teacher trainees from Perlis Institute of Teacher Education (IPG Perlis).

In making this call, Deputy Dewan Speaker and Lanang MP Alice Lau expressed shock and sorrow over the incident, describing it as “deeply regrettable” and noting that it has drawn significant public attention to the safety management of outdoor activities in higher education institutions.

In a statement, she urged Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh and relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive and thorough investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

She also called on the Education Ministry to make the findings public, ensuring the process is independent and transparent so that the truth can be established and justice served for the victims’ families.

At the same time, Lau said the ministry must actively assist the families in managing necessary arrangements, including providing coordination and support to ease their burden during this difficult time.

Beyond the investigation, she stressed the need for a comprehensive review of existing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety mechanisms for such activities, including risk assessments, team leadership and emergency response measures, to prevent similar incidents.

“Educational institutions must uphold the highest standards when organising activities involving student safety, ensuring full compliance with established safety protocols,” she said.

She further called on the ministry to reassess the suitability of outdoor training activities conducted by higher education institutions and reforms for high-risk programmes, with student safety as the top priority.

Lau emphasised that safeguarding students’ lives must remain the most fundamental consideration, with all activities carried out under strict and robust safety measures.

She urged all relevant parties to act with professionalism and accountability to ensure proper closure for the victims’ families and restore public confidence in the system.

“We hope that through this investigation and review, accountability can be established and institutional improvements made to enhance the overall safety standards of campus activities,” she added.
