KUCHING (Feb 4): With Chinese New Year less than two weeks away, splashes of red have begun to dominate shops and marketplaces across Kuching, accompanied by familiar festive tunes that signal the countdown to the celebration.
Households are busy stocking up on snacks, sweets, beverages and, of course, decorations as they prepare to usher in the festive season.
A visit to Kenyalang Market and TMC at CityOne Megamall shows that this year’s decorations go beyond the traditional, offering a lively mix of creativity, humour and modern pop culture while staying true to the festive spirit.
Among the more eye-catching displays are wall and door stickers featuring an unexpected theme — My Little Pony.
One standout shows Rainbow Dash dressed in traditional Chinese attire, complete with festive greetings wishing peace and happiness — a playful touch that feels especially fitting, given that ponies are, after all, horses.
Modern-themed decorations have also gained popularity, with blind-box figurines and Lego-style collectables depicting the God of Wealth, the God of Love and other auspicious figures drawing the attention of shoppers.

Some stalls have taken creativity a step further, showcasing novelty items such as God of Wealth figurines encased in snow globes and decorative trees crafted from old coins, blending symbolism with imaginative design.
Festive sofa cushions are another popular choice, offering a simple yet cheerful way to add warmth and colour to living spaces.
Artificial flowers are also widely available, alongside Chinese water bamboo — a popular houseplant believed to bring good fortune, happiness and prosperity in the new year.

Despite the fresh and imaginative designs, traditional decorations remain a firm favourite, with classic couplets, lanterns and auspicious symbols continuing to take pride of place in many homes.
Together, the blend of old and new reflects how Chinese New Year traditions continue to evolve — and in the Year of the Horse, festive creativity in Kuching is clearly galloping ahead.
