KUCHING, Feb 6: More than 15 companies from Brunei Darussalam are exploring potential collaborations with Sarawak in an engagement focused on priority sectors including energy, food security, SME market access and the development of high-growth industries, underscoring growing momentum in cross-border trade and investment between the two neighbours.

According to a media release on Thursday (Feb 5), the engagement was facilitated by the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment Sarawak (MINTRED) in collaboration with the BIMP-EAGA Business Council (BEBC) and the Sarawak Business Federation (SBF), through an official visit by the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) to Sarawak.

The visit forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen regional economic cooperation and deepen business connectivity within the BIMP-EAGA sub-region.

During the visit, Brunei enterprises were given insights into Sarawak’s business environment, including its regulatory framework, cost structures and investment landscape.

Participating companies from various sectors took part in business matching and networking sessions, providing a platform for both Sarawakian and Bruneian firms to identify synergies and explore joint ventures and market expansion opportunities.

As part of the programme, the BEDB delegation, led by Norlela Suhailee, together with Sheikh Abdul Mahdani Dato Paduka Sheikh Abdul Gani, Consul General of Brunei Darussalam in Sarawak, paid a courtesy visit on Deputy Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment Sarawak Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh. The meeting was also attended by permanent secretary of MINTRED Datu Lester Matthew.

The courtesy call reaffirmed the strong bilateral ties and long-standing economic relationship between Brunei Darussalam and Sarawak.

Discussions centred on enhancing cross-border investment flows and collaboration in key sectors identified as strategic for sustainable and inclusive growth, particularly energy, food security, SME development and emerging high-growth industries.

Following the visit, the Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office, Brunei Darussalam (STATOB) will continue to facilitate follow-up engagements between companies from both sides to ensure that discussions and business leads generated during the visit translate into tangible outcomes and mutually beneficial partnerships.

The BEDB visit reflects the shared commitment of Brunei Darussalam and Sarawak to deepen economic cooperation, strengthen private sector linkages and create new growth opportunities for enterprises operating in both markets. — DayakDaily
