KUCHING, April 23: An elderly man reported missing yesterday after going fishing with his wife was found safe by rescue teams in a forested area near Kampung Staie Bukit Sagan in Limbang today.

The victim, identified as 77-year-old Bujang Nyanau, was discovered at about 3.40pm, roughly 4km from his longhouse, bringing an end to an hours-long search and rescue (SAR) operation conducted by the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak.

According to a statement from the Bomba Sarawak Operations Centre, the department received an emergency call at 8.25am today regarding the missing man at Kampung Staie Bukit Sagan, near Limbang.

Initial information revealed that the victim had gone fishing with his wife at Sungai Pinang at about 8am on April 22. The couple later separated at around 4.30pm, with the wife returning home while the victim failed to do so.

A SAR team from the Limbang Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Limbang) led by PBK I Awang Adani Damit was deployed and arrived at the victim’s home at 9.12am, before proceeding to the incident location for briefing and operations.

Search efforts officially began at 11am, with teams combing through the first entry point into the forest. Despite expanding the search radius to 1km, no trace of the victim was found.

At 12.30pm, a second search route covering a 3km radius was activated, followed by a break at 1.20pm.

Operations resumed at 2.30pm with teams splitting into three groups to intensify the search near the longhouse and surrounding farm areas.

At 3.40pm, rescuers successfully located the elderly man safe and in stable condition. However, one auxiliary police officer involved in the operation experienced shortness of breath and was advised to rest before continuing duties.

The victim was later escorted out of the forest to a safe area at the longhouse.

The SAR operation was officially concluded at 5.20pm. — DayakDaily
