KUCHING, Apr 20: The Brooke Dockyard Industrial Heritage Museum is set to open to the public tomorrow (Apr 21) and is expected to become a new attraction in the city, further strengthening the heritage- and history-based tourism sector.
According to the Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, this will be after the museum is officially inaugurated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg tonight.
“The Brooke Dockyard Industrial Heritage Museum, previously known simply as Brooke Dockyard, is the first shipyard established in Borneo and Malaysia since 1912 during the era of Charles Brooke.
“Originally, it provided services for royal vessels before expanding into ship repair, oil and gas support, and engineering training, making it the first industrial workplace of its kind,” he said following a courtesy call on the Premier at the Satria Pertiwi Complex today to deliver the official invitation for the museum’s opening ceremony and to share details on the programme as well as updates on the Sarawak Museum Department, as reported by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
Abdul Karim, who is also the Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development, added that the museum features various galleries, including original dockyard machinery and exhibitions showcasing the evolution of industry.
He added that admission is currently free, and the new museum complements existing attractions such as the Borneo Cultures Museum and the Sarawak Cultural Village.
Also present at the courtesy call were the Sarawak Museum Department director, Nancy Jolhi, and deputy director, Yasmin Khalid Nicholls. — DayakDaily
