KUCHING, April 4: A bush fire that broke out along Jalan Sultan Tengah, Lorong 5A Sumber Alam here this afternoon was successfully contained by firefighters before it could spread to a nearby forested area.
According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), an emergency call was received at 1.38pm, prompting immediate deployment from Batu Lintang fire stations.
Firefighters from Petra Jaya Fire and Rescue Station, assisted by Padungan Fire and Rescue Station, arrived at the scene within five minutes.
The fire, which affected approximately 0.12 hectares of shrubland, was brought under control before it could spread to an adjacent forest area estimated at 30 hectares.
No casualties were reported in the incident.
Senior Fire Officer TPgB Mohd Raffy Saibi led the operation, with a total of 19 personnel involved. The team deployed one 1,000-foot hose line with two nozzles, supported by fire engines and a nearby fire hydrant as the water source.
The operation concluded at 5.18pm after a drone assessment confirmed that the fire had been completely extinguished.
Preliminary investigations at the scene revealed that the fire is believed to have been caused by the burning of cable rubber by irresponsible individuals, which ignited the surrounding vegetation.
A total of five vehicles — two fire rescue tenders (FRT), one water tanker, and two Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) units — were deployed in the operation. — DayakDaily
