BETONG (Feb 5): Winning two gold medals in the men’s 60kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Sarawak Games (Suksar) has boosted Lawrenson Gawan Lik’s chances of staking a claim for a place in the Sarawak team for the 22nd Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Selangor later this year.
Lawrenson, who represented the Central Zone, topped both the snatch and clean and jerk categories — a significant improvement from his previous outing, where he only managed a bronze medal for the Central Zone contingent.
Although he has yet to map out a clear plan, the 16-year-old said he is determined to continue working harder in pursuit of representing Sarawak at Sukma.
“For now, I’m not too sure, but I will keep putting in the effort so that I can represent Sarawak at Sukma this year,” he said in a news report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) after the medal presentation ceremony at Dewan Panglima Rentap here today.
The medals were presented by Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak, who is also Suksar IV 2026 chairman, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu.
Lawrenson dedicated his success to his family and coach, whom he said had continuously given him encouragement and support throughout his training period.
In the snatch category, he successfully lifted 80kg, while in the clean and jerk, he recorded a lift of 103kg.
