KUCHING, April 16: Clinical Research Malaysia’s (CRM) Sarawak branch is now the largest in the country, with 34 staff supported by an annual allocation of RM6.5 million, underscoring the federal government’s strong commitment to advancing Sarawak’s clinical research capacity.
Minister of Health Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad emphasised that the investment reflects a serious push to develop local research talent and strengthen facilities, positioning Sarawak as a key player in Malaysia’s clinical research ecosystem.
“Sarawak’s outstanding achievements are undoubtedly strongly supported by CRM’s investments.
“This is clearly demonstrated by Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), which now stands prominently as a leading oncology research centre in the country, with numerous successes in conducting First-in-Human (FIH) studies,” he said in a post on his social media after officiating the opening of the new CRM Sarawak branch office at Kozi Square today.
The event also witnessed the launch of the CRM Annual Report 2025 and the IQVIA White Paper titled “Malaysia: The New Destination for Early Phase Trials.”
“This is highly significant as it recognises our infrastructure readiness and expertise at the international level,” he said.
On overall progress, Dr Dzulkefly said the CRM Annual Report 2025 recorded encouraging developments, with 46 per cent of sponsored clinical trials successfully conducted at Ministry of Health facilities nationwide.
He stressed that the expansion of research sites is crucial in improving public access to innovative treatments and therapies, particularly for critical diseases.
He also commended clinical researchers, healthcare professionals and patients for their contributions in driving the agenda forward.
“The Madani government will continue to drive this clinical research ecosystem forward to ensure Malaysia remains competitive as a leading regional destination, while delivering added value and the highest quality of care for the people,” he added.
