SIBU (April 11): Parents should play a more proactive role in supporting their children’s development, particularly in navigating the increasingly complex digital landscape, said Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Sarawak Datuk Michael Tiang.
He noted that children today were highly exposed to various pressures and negative influences online, making continuous parental guidance and support essential.
“Children nowadays are deeply exposed to the online world, which may bring pressure and negative influences, and it is therefore important for parents to remain actively involved in guiding them,” said the Pelawan assemblyman when speaking at a joint Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, held in conjunction with the launch of a smart classroom at SJKC Kiang Hin here yesterday.
He described the introduction of the smart classroom as a significant step in enhancing the use of technology in education, providing a more interactive and technology-driven learning environment aligned with current needs.
“However, regardless of how advanced the facilities are, success ultimately depends on individual effort,” he told the pupils.
On the joint festive celebration, Tiang said it reflected the unity and harmony among Sarawak’s diverse communities.
He also revealed that the school would celebrate its 100th anniversary next year, marking a significant milestone and recognising the contributions of past generations.
“A century is a milestone worth celebrating, and I hope to have the opportunity to witness the historic moment. Over the past 100 years, the dedication of former teachers and school leaders has shaped the school into what it is today,” he said.
Also present were the school’s board of management chairman So Teck Kee, Sibu Division Unity Department assistant officer Mohammad Noridzwan Sawi, school liaison officer Sgt Rashidi Jamel and SJKC Kiang Hin headmaster Ling Ing Kiong.
