Lim is led out of the courtroom after sentencing.
SIBU (Jan 7): The Sessions Court here has sentenced a 35-year-old man to five years in prison and one stroke of the cane for possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.
Judge Musyiri Peet convicted Lim Chai Su from Julau on his own guilty plea and ordered for the jail term to commence from the date of his arrest on Dec 23, 2025.
Lim was charged with having a cockspur in his possession without any lawful authority or purpose at around 12.10am on that day at Lorong 1, Jalan Lau King Howe here.
He was charged under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substance and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, which provides for imprisonment of between five and 10 years and caning upon conviction.
Based on the facts of the case, policemen patrolling Jalan Lau King Howe at the time detained Lim after noticing him behaving suspiciously while driving a car.
A body search led to the discovery of a cockspur concealed in his right trouser pocket.
Lim and the vehicle were subsequently brought in for further investigation.
A further inspection of the vehicle, witnessed by Lim, revealed another 38 cockspurs in the car boot.
During the investigation, Lim admitted the cockspur found in his pocket belonged to him, but claimed the 38 cockspurs found in the boot belonged to a friend.
Deputy public prosecutor Nuralisa Natasha Nazrulzam appeared for the prosecution while Lim was unrepresented by legal counsel.
