KUCHING (Jan 31): Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is prepared for a state election to be called at any time, but its priority remains governing and delivering for the people, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof.

Responding to recent remarks by Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi during an interview on BFM’s Breakfast Grille regarding the possibility of a state election being held this year, Fadillah clarified that the statement did not suggest a fixed timeline.

“What was meant is that the election can be held at any time, including this year,” said Fadillah when met by reporters after the Chinese New Year contributions handover ceremony here at Dewan SUPP on Saturday.

He also noted that the term of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) expires in February next year, giving room for the election to be called at any point before then.

When asked whether Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) would be prepared for the election, Fadillah, who is also the Petrajaya Member of Parliament (MP), stressed that the party does not operate based on electoral cycles.

“For GPS, we do not work for elections. We work for the people all the time,” he said.

He added that elections are simply a democratic process to return power to the citizens, allowing them to assess the government’s performance.

“Whether there is an election or not, our work continues every year,” he said.
