KUCHING, Oct 16: Four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicles and boats are being deployed to deliver healthcare to remote communities in Sarawak, while emergency medical evacuations (MEDEVAC) are being coordinated through additional government air assets following the suspension of Flying Doctor Service (FDS) after fatal helicopter crash in Baram on Sept 8.

Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Ming Tee said the alternative arrangements were introduced after the FDS was temporarily suspended following the tragedy at Long Lellang, Baram, on Sept 8, which claimed five lives, including four healthcare personnel and a helicopter pilot.

He said the government had activated inter-agency contingency plans to ensure emergency medical care continued during the suspension, with life-saving evacuations coordinated through the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Air Unit, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) Air Wing and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).

“The alternative methods implemented include deploying mobile clinic teams via land (4WD vehicles) and river transport (boats) to accessible areas,” he said during the question-and-answer session inresponds to Krian assemblyman Friday Belik at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.

He said the government was formulating proposals for a comprehensive improvement and strengthening of the FDS, with a focus on operational safety, the suitability and capability of aircraft, emergency preparedness and training, as well as the welfare and protection of personnel.

Michael said the review would also consider the findings of relevant assessments and investigations, healthcare needs in rural areas and suitable alternative delivery methods to maintain service continuity while prioritising safety and effectiveness.

He added that the Sarawak Health Department, in collaboration with JBPM, was organising the Sarawak Medevac Staff Engagement, Safety Briefing and Aircraft Familiarisation Roadshow 2026 to strengthen medical personnel’s preparedness, understanding and confidence when responding to MEDEVAC activations and escorting patients.

Michael said the government recognised the sacrifices of frontline healthcare personnel who served isolated communities, extending its deepest condolences to the families of the five victims. — DayakDaily
