MIRI (Feb 1): The Federation of Guandong Community Association Sarawak brought early Lunar New Year joy to residents of the Miri Home for the Aged yesterday, spreading joy through local delicacies, angpows and festive performances.
State Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, who officiated at the event, hailed showing respect and care for the elderly as a core value that must continue to be upheld, as senior citizens had devoted their lives to their families and contributed significantly to society.
He said caring for the elderly people should not be limited to festive occasions, but must also include companionship, sincere concern and regular engagement as such gestures reflected society’s appreciation for the sacrifices and efforts of the older generation.
In this regard, the Senadin assemblyman also said the state government remained attentive to the well-being and quality of life of the elderly citizens through various initiatives, while encouraging greater collaboration among community groups, organisations and the public to ensure that care for senior citizens would extend beyond festive seasons.
Lee also commended the federation and its women’s section for their continued commitment to social care.
Later, the federation’s president Dato Sri Kam Pau Siong presented a cheque for RM1,000 to Miri Home for the Aged’s supervisor Penghulu Betty Pong, as a small gesture to assist with the centre’s daily operations.
