KUCHING (Jan 26): The state government is developing a four-lane carriageway to ease traffic congestion between Mile 7 here and Bau, said Datuk Lo Khere Chiang.

The Batu Kitang assemblyman said the proposed road will also be extended from Kampung Bumbok to Jalan Stephen Yong.

“There is such a plan and work has already started in stages,” he told reporters at the Jalan Batu Kitang-Jalan Haji Baki construction site here on Monday.

Lo said construction has begun from Bau towards Bumbok and Jalan Stephen Yong, as this approach is expected to help ease traffic flow without causing major disruption.

“If works start from Mile 7 first, traffic congestion will become much worse. That is why the project begins with Bau, Bumbok, and Jalan Stephen Yong,” he explained.

He said widening works will improve traffic movement, especially for motorists travelling between Jalan Stephen Yong and Bau, as well as from Mile 7 to Bumbok.

He noted that most sections of Jalan Stephen Yong have already been upgraded to four lanes, with the remaining two-lane stretch located between Bumbok and the Jalan Wee Boon Ting junction.

“For this section, the consultant has already been appointed and the design is more or less completed. The project has now reached the tender stage,” he added.
