SERIAN, Feb 4: Indonesia has expressed interest in studying Sarawak’s semiconductor industry development model, reflecting growing international recognition of the State’s technological capabilities, said Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
In a TVS news, he revealed that the Indonesian government recently invited him to share Sarawak’s experience in generating revenue and developing high-tech industries, particularly in semiconductors.
“Even their minister expressed the intention to grant me a ‘Gold Visa’, allowing me to travel to Indonesia, especially Jakarta, at any time to share knowledge on the semiconductor industry,” he said when officiating the 65th Sarawak Tilawah and Hafazan Al-Quran Ceremony at the Serian Convention Centre on Wednesday (Feb 4).
Abang Johari said the recognition underscores that Sarawak is on the right path in exploring high-impact, emerging knowledge areas, including next-generation semiconductor chip development now being led by local talent.
He highlighted that these efforts are further strengthened through strategic collaborations with international semiconductor experts, including leading universities from the United Kingdom.
“These initiatives are set to position Sarawak as a global player in world-class emerging knowledge fields,” he noted.
“Today, Sarawak has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Bristol. As a first step, three Sarawakian PhD students have been sent to explore next-generation semiconductor research.
“If successfully implemented, Sarawak will not only become a key player at the State and national levels but also a global force in cutting-edge knowledge fields. God willing, we pray this effort succeeds,” he added.
Looking ahead, Abang Johari said the Sarawak government will continue exploring new high-tech sectors, such as aerospace, by offering free educational initiatives to Sarawakian students pursuing university studies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). — DayakDaily
