KUCHING (Jan 27): The Saudi Culinary Arts Commission led by Majed AlMuhanna paid a courtesy call on Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng on Monday.

The visit was part of efforts to strengthen international collaboration in the field of gastronomy between Madinah and Kuching.

A statement from the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) said the meeting highlighted the shared recognition of both Madinah and Kuching as members of the Unesco Creative Cities of Gastronomy network, reflecting their rich culinary heritage, strong food culture, and commitment to promoting gastronomy as a platform for cultural exchange and sustainable development.

During the courtesy call, both parties discussed collaborations focusing on culinary diplomacy, knowledge sharing, and cultural appreciation.

The key initiatives include a chef exchange programme between Kuching and Madinah, aimed at fostering professional development, cross-cultural learning, and the promotion of traditional cuisines from both cities on the international stage.

In addition, discussions were held on the development of a joint publication titled ‘Kuching–Madinah: A Cross-Cultural Culinary Journey’.

The book is envisioned as a collaborative effort to document the culinary narratives, heritage, and food traditions of both cities, serving as a cultural bridge that celebrates diversity, history, and shared values through gastronomy.

“I welcomed the delegation and expressed his appreciation for the initiative, noting that gastronomy is a powerful medium to strengthen international friendship, promote cultural understanding, and enhance Kuching’s position as a Unesco Creative City of Gastronomy,” Wee said in the statement.

He also reaffirmed MBKS’ commitment to supporting meaningful partnerships that contribute to cultural sustainability and global engagement.

“The courtesy call marks an important milestone in strengthening ties between Kuching and Madinah, paving the way for long-term cooperation in culinary arts, cultural exchange, and creative city development under the Unesco framework,” he added.
