KUCHING (April 3): A 46-year-old local man lost RM107,796 after falling victim to a phone scam in early February.
Kuching district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the incident occurred on Feb 3, when the victim was contacted by an unknown individual claiming to be from the Ministry of Defence.
The suspect offered the victim an opportunity to become a supplier for a power station at the Muara Tuang camp in Kota Samarahan.
“After falling for the scam, the victim was instructed to contact a supposed power station supplier in Miri.
“The victim then made four transactions to three different bank accounts, totalling RM107,796,” he said in a statement.
The victim realised he had been duped after being asked to make additional payments, while the alleged supplier continued to give various excuses.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
