KUCHING, Oct 16: SJK Bintawa needs to install covers over a scupper drain along its school compound and repair a leaking roof to minimise potential safety hazards for students, following a joint safety audit by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and the school.

The audit involved MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, council officers and school representatives, with a focus on identifying potential hazards and ensuring a safer learning environment for pupils.

Particular attention was given to students under the Integrated Special Education Programme (PPKI), highlighting the importance of ensuring that school facilities are safe and accessible for children with special educational needs.

Wee said children’s safety must be prioritised and potential hazards addressed before accidents occur.

“Parents should feel assured that their children are safe at school. Whether it is an uncovered drain or a leaking roof, we must take these concerns seriously and work together to address them,” he said in a statement today.

He added that the needs of PPKI students must be considered when planning improvements to ensure every child can move around the school safely and comfortably.

The joint audit is in line with MBKS’s Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) Action Plan 2026–2028, which includes school safety audits and infrastructure improvements to protect children.

MBKS will follow up with the school and relevant parties to coordinate the necessary action to address the issues identified during the audit. — DayakDaily
