KUCHING, Oct 14: Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon has urged the Sarawak government to expedite the establishment of a special committee with a clear mandate to address longstanding development issues affecting the Bakun Resettlement Scheme, including customary land rights in communities surrounding the Bakun Hydroelectric Dam.
He said the proposed committee should involve the relevant ministries, government agencies and community representatives to examine outstanding issues and formulate fair, comprehensive and lasting solutions.
“The issues affecting the Bakun Resettlement Scheme (BRS) in Sungai Asap and the customary land rights of communities around the dam remained unresolved and required a coordinated approach,” he said while debating the Sarawak Budget 2027 at the State Legislative Assembly (DUNS) sitting today.
Chukpai referred to a meeting with Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on Feb 25 this year, during which he brought community representatives to raise their concerns directly with the Premier.
During the meeting, Abang Johari suggested that a special committee or task force be established to examine the matters raised.
Chukpai expressed appreciation for the Premier’s openness and willingness to listen to the communities’ concerns, but said the committee had yet to be formed despite follow-up meetings.
He therefore called for its establishment to be expedited, stressing that it must be given a clear mandate to review the outstanding matters and recommend appropriate solutions.
“I wish to emphasise that our intention is not to find fault with any party.
“Rather, we want to ensure that longstanding issues that continue to burden the communities are resolved responsibly and with due consideration,” he said.
Chukpai expressed confidence that close cooperation between the Sarawak government’s leadership, relevant agencies and community representatives would help bring about a conclusive resolution in the interests of the people. — DayakDaily
