The distribution of school kits benefitted 49 SK Kuala Baram 1 pupils.
MIRI (Jan 23): Nam Cheong Dockyards Sdn Bhd has continued its commitment to community development by donating school essentials to pupils of SK Kuala Baram 1, reinforcing the offshore support vessel builder’s pledge to support education in areas it operates.
Under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, the company contributed school uniforms, shoes, socks, bags, stationery, and exercise books to 49 underprivileged pupils, helping to ease the financial burden on families at the start of the new school term.
“Kuala Baram is very close to our hearts, and this is a gesture rooted in decades of shared history,” said Nam Cheong executive director (Operations) Joseph Tiong in a statement, following the handover ceremony on Jan 5.
“Since the early 1960s, our dockyard and operations here have grown together with the people of this community,” he said, adding that many of the company’s leaders, staff, and crew hail from Kuala Baram.
“Our success has been built on their hard work, loyalty and commitment,” he added.
Tiong noted that the initiative went beyond the items donated, reflecting Nam Cheong’s belief in giving back to the community and investing in opportunities for the next generation.
The CSR effort underscores Nam Cheong’s long-term commitment to Sarawak, where the group has been a fixture since its humble start in 1968 as a fishing vessel builder, before growing into one of Southeast Asia’s leading offshore support vessel players.
Todau, Nam Cheong is Malaysia’s largest offshore support vessel builder, operating one of the country’s biggest shipyards for such vessels and managing a chartering fleet of 38 vessels worldwide.
Since 2007, the group has delivered more than 140 vessels to clients across Malaysia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, West Africa, Latin America, Europe and the United States.
“Yet in Kuala Baram, its focus remains close to home — on the children whose futures we believe are worth investing in,” the statement read.
