SERIAN, Feb 5: Sarawak’s economic development strategy is anchored in knowledge, human capital and ethical values, principles that are strongly emphasised in the teachings of the Al-Quran, said Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Speaking at the 65th Qur’an Recitation and Memorisation Assembly on Wednesday (Feb 4), Abang Johari said the annual event should inspire a deeper engagement with the Al-Quran beyond recitation, highlighting its guidance on knowledge, self-improvement and societal progress.

He said the Quran provides a framework that remains highly relevant to modern development, including in economics, science and governance.

“When we understand the meaning of the Al-Quran, we find guidance that can be applied in managing development and improving the quality of human life,” he said at the event held in Serian Convention Centre.

Abang Johari linked this approach to the ideas of 14th-century Islamic scholar Ibn Khaldun, whose work placed human capital at the heart of economic and civilisational growth.

“Ibn Khaldun’s work shows that lasting change begins with knowledge and self-transformation. When individuals come together, they can collectively drive the progress of society.

“This principle reflects the Quranic teaching that Allah will not change the condition of a people unless they change what is within themselves,” he said.

Against this backdrop, he said Sarawak is strengthening its development agenda by investing in knowledge-based and high-value industries.

He highlighted the State’s initiatives in aerospace, astronomy, semiconductors and emerging technologies, including a recent collaboration with the University of Bristol to develop advanced expertise and strengthen Sarawak’s talent pipeline.

“Our objective is clear. We want to develop Sarawak through knowledge, by equipping our people with new skills and capabilities that will shape the State’s future economy,” he said.

The Premier also stressed that economic growth must be balanced with environmental sustainability, noting Sarawak’s adoption of green energy initiatives to address climate change and safeguard ecological balance. — DayakDaily
