KUCHING (Jan 26): SK St John Nanga Tiga at Ulu Layar in Betong has been allocated RM1.53 million for its infrastructure upgrades.

The amount includes RM1.3 million for the reconstruction of the school’s boarding block, RM200,000 for the reconstruction of the teachers’ quarters, and RM30,000 for the parent-teacher association (PTA).

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is Bukit Saban assemblyman, announced this during a ‘Back-to-School’ programme for primary schools in his constituency, yesterday.

During the event, held at SK St John Nanga Tiga, Uggah also announced allocations for other schools in Bukit Saban.

These include RM10,000 each for seven primary schools to purchase reading materials; RM20,000 each for the PTA of six primary schools; as well as three smart boards for each of seven primary schools.

A total of 914 pupils from schools in Bukit Saban constituency, including SK Nanga Gayau, SJKC Chung Hua Spaoh, SK St John Nanga Tiga, SK Penom, SK Spaoh, SK Suri and SK Paku Central, received essential school aid during yesterday’s event.

The assistance meant to help ease the financial burden off the families at the start of the new school term.

“The programme reflects the Sarawak government’s continued commitment to prioritising education and rural development,” said Uggah.

He emphasised education as being the cornerstone of Sarawak’s progress and thus, he called upon the parents and teachers to always work closely together to ensure that school-children in rural areas such as Bukit Saban would excel in their studies and qualify for the Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES).
