KUCHING, April 3: Street lights, drier roads, and safer pathways are transforming Lorong Sungai Apong, bringing comfort to residents’ daily commutes following prompt action by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS).

MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, accompanied by councillors Albert Tay and Eric Tay, visited the area yesterday (Apr 2) to review progress after his previous inspection.

“This initiative forms part of MBKS ongoing efforts under the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI), which prioritises the creation of safe, accessible, and inclusive environments for children.

“Enhancing infrastructure along school routes remains a key focus in ensuring that children can travel safely within their communities,” he said in a media statement today.

The upgrades include new street lights, improved drainage, a raised road, and perforated pipes, making the area safer and drier even after heavy rain.

During the visit, Wee met students and parents from nearby schools, including SJK Sungai Apong, and handed out stationery to the students.

He received positive feedback from residents, who welcomed the swift improvements and said the upgrades make school commutes safer and easier.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and implement further improvements where needed. Our priority is to ensure that our infrastructure serves everyone safely and effectively, and that no one is left behind as we build a more inclusive and liveable city,” he added. — DayakDaily
