Sarawak bowling trio leads Malaysia’s charge at Asean Para Games in Bangkok

KUCHING (Jan 22): World champions Marcos Chang Hao Hong and Abang Yahya Abang Azhar, and fellow Sarawakian and world doubles bronze medalist Wong Kee Soon are set to keep the Malaysian flag flying high in the para tenpin bowling competition of the Asean Para Games (APG) held in Bangkok, Thailand until Jan 26.

Malaysia has targeted six gold medals at Blu-O Rhythm & Bowl, The Esplanade Ratchada Mall in Bangkok.

The Sarawak trio are guided by coach Jerusha Chan Poe Yin with morale support from state senior bowler Datin Rakiah Ali who joined them on Tuesday.

They were selected to represent the country based on their excellent performance in recent international competitions including the International Bowling Federation (IBF) Para Bowling World Championships held in Hong Kong last January.

Marcos won the TPB9 men’s singles gold while Abang Yahya bagged golds in the TPB4 men’s singles and men’s all events. Classifications for TPB4 is intellectual impairment while TPB9 is lower limb impairment.

This will be the debut appearance for Marcos at the APG while Wong partnered Marcos to win the TPB9 men’s doubles gold at the para world championships.

Other members of the Malaysian squad are Mohd Suhairi Abdul Kadir, Muhammad Suhaili Ab Hamid, Ku Izham Ku Harun, Mohd Rizal Hassan, Muhammad Razif Iskandar Abdul Muiz, Rosheedy Faizal Roslan, Ahmad Nazri Hamzah, Julieyati Abd Jala, Ruzila Mustafa, Mohd Azrin Rahim, Nadia Syafika Abd Rahman, Muhammad Amin Abd Rashid and Mohd Fauzi Md Ghazali.

The national team is managed by Shaikh Muhammad Haznan Shaikh Hashim and led by head coach Richard Teh Chean Teck and coach Abu Bakar Nyat.
