KUCHING, June 13: The Sarawak government is exploring the introduction of a legal framework related to wakaf to support the endowment of land as part of efforts to strengthen community development and enhance the quality of life in villages.

Deputy Minister in the Premier of Sarawak’s Department (Law, Malaysia Agreement 1963 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali said the initiative reflects the State’s recognition of the wakaf concept as a valuable mechanism for supporting local development, particularly in providing land for community use such as religious, educational and social facilities.

“I think that is a very good idea. Wakaf is beneficial because when we dedicate land for community use, we continue to receive rewards for as long as people benefit from it,” she said when officiating the Samariang Festival 2026 at Surau Nurul Muslimin in Kampung Sungai Bedil Besar today.

Sharifah Hasidah said she supports the idea, noting its potential to transform villages into more structured, attractive and sustainable living environments.

However, she emphasised that a proper legal framework is essential to ensure the effective implementation of wakaf.

“At the moment, there is no specific law governing this. Nevertheless, I believe wakaf is an excellent concept when carefully considered and properly implemented,” she said.

The Samariang assemblywoman added that clear legislation would help streamline processes and ensure endowed land is managed in accordance with its intended purpose for the benefit of the community.

She said the Sarawak government is currently studying the possibility of introducing laws related to wakaf to support such initiatives in the future.

Sharifah Hasidah also highlighted ongoing development in Kampung Sungai Bedil, noting that several improvements have already been carried out, including the construction of a new surau, which is set to be officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof on June 14.

Meanwhile, infrastructure upgrades by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), including road paving works, have further enhanced accessibility and living conditions in the village. — DayakDaily
