KUCHING, April 19: Sarawak has the potential to generate up to 22 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity based on existing statistics, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said this projected capacity far exceeds current consumption levels and positions Sarawak as a key regional energy supplier.

“According to available statistics, we can generate up to 22,000MW or 22GW. But if we diversify our energy sources, it could be even more than that,” he said when speaking at the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Convention 2026 held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.

Abang Johari further said that Sarawak is currently targeting to produce 10GW of renewable energy by 2030, and 15GW by 2035.

At present, about 70 per cent of the State’s electricity generation comes from hydro, supported by five operational dams producing roughly 7GW, while the remaining 30 per cent comes from low-carbon gas turbines.

“We only use about 7GW. The rest we share within ASEAN. Singapore uses about 1GW, and Peninsular Malaysia also around 1GW,” he added.

Abang Johari also said Sarawak is already supplying electricity to Kalimantan, with the neighbouring regions requesting further increases in supply, reflecting growing regional dependence on Sarawak’s energy resources.

He stressed that surplus energy would translate into new revenue streams for the State, strengthening its long-term economic base. — DayakDaily
